Self-Directed Learning in Madeira: A Paradise for Curious Minds

Self-directed learning can happen anywhere in the world, but certain places make it easier, richer, and more inspiring. Madeira is one of those places. With its stunning landscapes, welcoming communities, and endless opportunities to explore, this island is a natural classroom for learners of all ages.

Why Madeira Supports Self-Directed Learning

One of the most important ingredients for self-directed learning is the environment—and Madeira has it in abundance:

  • Safety and friendliness: Madeira is one of the safest places in the world, with an extremely low crime rate. People here are warm and welcoming, making exploration and learning stress-free and joyful.

  • Perfect climate: The weather is mild and pleasant all year round. This allows for hours spent outside—whether hiking in the mountains, swimming in the ocean, or wandering through charming villages.

  • Inspiring landscapes: Madeira’s landscapes are both diverse and breathtaking. The island is crisscrossed with levadas, traditional water channels running from the mountains to the ocean. They create lush, green trails where flowers bloom year-round, inviting learners to explore nature in every season.

  • Vibrant communities and culture: Madeira is full of festivals, markets, and communal celebrations. Locals love sharing their traditions with visitors and expats, making it easy for learners to engage with culture, history, and language firsthand.

A Growing Unschooling Community

Madeira is not just a beautiful backdrop for learning—it’s home to a growing community of unschooling families who gather regularly to live, learn, and grow together with joy. These gatherings create an inspiring environment where self-directed learning naturally happens, and families can share experiences, collaborate on projects, and encourage one another in a culture of curiosity and freedom.

A Place To Be: Our Future Unschooling Neighborhood

In August 2025, we purchased land for A Place To Be, an unschooling neighborhood designed to make self-directed learning even easier and more joyful. While the neighborhood is still in development, we already gather on the land regularly, experimenting with community learning and creative projects together.

Once fully built, A Place To Be will offer a wide range of activities and resources, including:

  • Farming and caring for animals – learn about food systems and responsibility firsthand

  • Library and science hub – spaces to read, research, and experiment

  • Co-working and woodworking sheds – support for creative projects and entrepreneurial ventures

  • Creative hub and amphitheater – music, drama, and artistic expression

  • And much more – opportunities for learning, collaboration, and fun for all ages

Every gathering and activity brings us closer to creating a vibrant, supportive environment for self-directed learning in Madeira.

Activities That Encourage Self-Directed Learning

Madeira itself offers endless ways to spark curiosity:

  • Nature exploration: Hike the levadas, discover waterfalls, and study local flora and fauna

  • Water adventures: Surf, kayak, or snorkel while observing marine life

  • Local crafts and traditions: Learn woodworking, embroidery, or cooking from local artisans

  • Cultural immersion: Join festivals, music events, and community gatherings to experience the island’s traditions

For Learners of All Ages

Whether you are a child discovering the world, a teen exploring new skills, or an adult pursuing lifelong learning, Madeira and our gatherings on the land for A Place To Be offer experiences for every age. The combination of safety, accessibility, and rich cultural opportunities creates an environment where self-directed learning thrives naturally.

In short: If you’re looking for a place where self-directed learning can flourish, Madeira—and our growing community at A Place To Be—offers safety, inspiration, and a supportive environment. Here, learning happens everywhere: in nature, with others, through hands-on projects, and in joyful exploration every day.
